    The Gallery

British Art Portfolio was set up by old friends Amanda Lowther and Louise Newton, in November 2011, following on from studying for their degrees in History of Art at the University of Leicester. Amanda and Louise were just 50 years young when they started at Leicester in 2008 as ‘mature students’.  They both enjoyed studying 20th & 21st Century British Art and Sculpture so much that they decided to start a mini pop-up gallery trading only in British Contemporary Art and Modern British Art and sculpture.  Their aim is to inspire their friends and friends of friends by bringing beautiful original art to the countryside.

Based in the heart of the Northamptonshire countryside, British Art Portfolio’s Guilsborough Gallery is a hub of excitement in the Art World – paintings, engravings, sculpture and ceramics from all aspects of British Art are available to view and purchase.  The Northamptonshire art gallery overlooks the Hollowell Reservoir and the views from the window and sculpture garden are stupendous.

  • OUT OF LITTLE BRITISH ACORNS GROW MIGHTY BRITISH OAKS.

British Art Portfolio is still a sapling but quite a sturdy one and Amanda and Louise hope that in the next 10 years they will grow into a mighty oak … by which time they will be ready to retire!

    The Exhibitions

Now about to embark on their eleventh year of trading, British Art Portfolio enjoys a reputation for exciting exhibitions in private homes, historic houses and galleries; private views are fantastic events where the champagne flows and people thoroughly enjoy seeing the British art & sculpture and meeting their friends. Seeing the paintings in a home setting gives people the opportunity to imagine what the works of art might look like in their own homes.

As something completely original – compared to any other art gallery – British Art Portfolio like to support a charity at each exhibition and give a percentage of their profits to the chosen cause along with all the drinks donations (first glass always free!!).  Each charity is nominated by the hosts of the exhibition and charities supported have been wide ranging, diverse & inspirational – below are a few examples:

Jo’s Cervical Cancer Trust, Riding Everest, Stop MS, East Anglian Children’s Hospice, Ronald McDonald House Oxford, ROSY, UK Youth, Tarporley War Memorial Cottage Hospital & Young Diabetes.   We have raised an average of £1,500 per exhibition – some more some less – our record was over £4,000 for Jo’s Trust at Deene Park in March 2016!

    The Partners

Both Amanda and Louise have backgrounds in British Art both Contemporary & Modern British.

Louise worked for many years at the gallery Browse & Darby in Cork Street where she learnt to love all Modern British art  – the gallery specialised in works by Walter Sickert, William Nicholson, Matthew Smith amongst the many luminaries of that period.  She came across the wonderful Gallery artists of the 80s & 90s – Andrew Farmer, Anthony Eyton, Philip Sutton, Diana Armfield, Anthony Fry, Patrick George, Patrick Symons.  Many are still painting today and British Art Portfolio has an example of Anthony Eyton’s work of which they are very proud – a street scene painted in Sudan – very evocative of his work,  (click here to see more). Anthony Eyton is still painting and is well into his 90’s!

Amanda has had a life-long passion for contemporary British art, she paints regularly and has exhibited at several joint shows over the last fifteen years.  She completed a foundation course at Rugby College and has studied fine art at the Richard Attenborough Centre in Leicester as well as the Prince’s Drawing School in London.
